The Urban Plus Fabric Collection by Camira

congestion . Fabric from the Urban Plus Line. Manufactured by Camira.
Was it Le Corbusier who first became enamored of the grid? Not that this famed architect and designer was the first to think of the concept, but his plan for the “ideal city” was perhaps the first to render the notion of geometric living so fully realized and so comprehensive. Alas, the world was not ready for Le Corbusier’s descending levels of cities, or perfect quadrants of buildings and city blocks, or even his squared-off buffer zones between urban and ex-urban zones. But I do think we’re all prepared for the city-scape themes of Camira’s Urban Plus Fabric Collection.
Camira’s Urban Plus Fabric Collection is a Contemporary Upholstery with an Architectural Aesthetic.

I would conjecture, in fact, that the intricate geometric contours of Camira’s Urban Plus would rather resemble Le Corbusier’s imaginary metropolis, at least as seen from on high. Featuring a pronounced linear design and palpable texture, Urban Plus offers “a structured geometric grid effect pattern reminiscent of a downtown urban cityscape.”
Le Corbusier couldn’t have said it better himself. The Urban Plus Line is comprised of over 30 distinct colorways. There’s the rich vibrant green of “Uptown,” perhaps suggesting the allure of big business and the promise of easy money; the cooler green of “Suburbia,” evoking the sanctuary of nature and the promise of repose. There’s even a shocking red called “Congestion”—just the shade for those who relish the teeming energy of the city, for better or for worse.

Camira’s Urban Plus Line is made from 100% recycled polyester, earning it the vaunted EU Flower certification for sustainability. It’s guaranteed to resist damage from abrasion for five years. And it’s easy to maintain—simply vacuum regularly and wipe spills away with a clean damp cloth. Urban Plus is a versatile collection, as Camira promises that “the freshly themed 30 colourways work well with our popular Xtreme Plus and Lucia ranges.”

In healthcare, every interaction between a patient and caregiver matters. Nurture helps support these moments by understanding people and asking whether the environment
is doing everything it can to support their needs.
For Empath, Nurture considered caregivers as “users” as much as patients and created a recliner that offers a variety of versatile, insight-driven design features to accommodate the needs of both.
Nurture’s Director of Product Design, Alan Rheault said, “by putting ourselves in their shoes and being empathetic to the realities of both patients and caregivers, Empath creates a safer, higher quality healthcare experience for both. It is truly a complete healthcare solution.”
Research and Insight Driven Design
For its latest product design, Nurture invested more than 2,000 hours of observation, photography and video research into what occurs between patient and caregiver as it relates to the recliner – a central component of patient care and recovery. This study of how recliners are used led Nurture to a simple conclusion — recliners needed to do more to help reduce risks to patients and caregivers.
“Watching caregivers transfer patients from the bed to the chair and back again was an ‘a-ha’ moment for the research and design team,” said Rheault.
For the patient, moving to the chair is a crucial step toward wellness. They are one step closer to going home. At the same time, patient transfer is an inherently difficult, dynamic process. It’s dynamic due to the sheer number of times a patient is moved from the bed to the chair and then back again. Factor in the physical limitations of the patient and the potential for injury — to patient and caregiver — is clear.
Researchers witnessed caregivers straining backs and patients bruising hips during bed-to-chair transfers. Malfunctioning or easily broken mechanisms caused even more discomfort and difficulty. “In essence, our role is to turn our careful observations into insight-based designs,” said Rheault. “This leads to better, safer, higher quality healthcare experiences.”
Enter Empath
In response, Nurture presents Empath™, an important tool for caregivers and a step toward wellness for patients.
“We considered the chair as a holistic healthcare solution – not just an assembly of available, off-the-shelf parts. We used our engineering expertise to improve, enhance and ensure a higher level of quality in Empath, while at the same time making it feature-rich with options appropriate for a wide variety of healthcare environments,” said Rheault.
To be a “best in class” product, Nurture built Empath with thoughtful, user-friendly design features.
For caregivers, Empath offers a newly-designed central lock mechanism that can be activated from the front on either side and makes this recliner intuitive and easy to use. Optional dual folding arms allow for easy patient transfers from either side. A drainage bag holder and IV pole are integrated into the chair for increased functionality and as an additional safety feature, Trendelenburg is also available.
For patients, highly-durable, yet soft “I-skin” arm material helps reduce injuries. Long, easy to reach reclining paddles and an optional adjustable headrest give patients comfort and control. Sculpted grip arms assist in getting in and out and make the chair a welcome destination.
Sturdy, Silent and Sophisticated
Its steel construction makes Empath one of the most durable recliners on the market
. In addition, Empath sports the most fluid casters available today — making this recliner quiet and easy to move — even with someone in it.
From a style standpoint, Empath presents a clean, sophisticated look in a compact, compressed footprint. It offers a refined, inviting aesthetic that’s neither overly residential nor overly clinical.
Empath is a complete recliner, designed from the ground up as an integrated, holistic solution and easily fits into nearly any healthcare environment. For patients, Empath is inviting and comfortable. For caregivers, Empath is safe and easy to use, which provides them with a sense of confidence to help create a truly healing environment.

The American Institute of Architecture‘s Portland affiliate will host the third installment in the city’s yearly Architecture + Design Festival this fall, with an official opening party September 29 and a full docket of design-world events all over town running through the month of October. This year’s hoopla coincides with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Oregon AIA chapter, to be commemorated with a special exhibition debuting at the Portland Center for Architecture on opening night.
Other festival highlights for the month include the Design Matters home tour, which will take a look inside six exceptional contemporary residences in the area; a neighborhood walkthrough the historic district of Reedwood, near the campus of Reed College; an evening of studio visits, wine, and canapes with three prominent local firms; and multiple forums, film screenings, and lectures.
Awards ceremonies are also a major part of the itinerary: the IIDA Awards will be announced October 20, honoring outstanding interior design work in the Northwest region, to be followed October 21 by the Young Designers Award, which recognizes the work of architects 30 and under. Architecture fans will even be able to get a sneak peak behind the scenes to see how the Portland AIA doles out its annual prizes, when several distinguished designers who make the award selections will be on hand for a special Evening With the Jury on October 26.
